Gliomas are a type of tumor that arises from glial cells in the brain or spinal cord. They are classified based on their grade, which indicates how aggressive or malignant the tumor is.
These are slower arowing, less aggressive tumors.Usually corresponds to Grade I or II tumors by the World Health Organization (WHO) classification.Typically originate from astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, or mixed (oligoastrocytomas).
Other Names:
Grade I: Pilocvtic astrocytoma,
Subependymal giant cell astrocytoma.
Grade II: Diffuse astrocytoma,
Oliqodendroqlioma, Mixed oligoastrocytoma.
Characteristics: Slow growth, often less
infiltrative, sometimes curable with surgery,
lower proliferation rate.
Prognosis: Generally better, but they can
progress to higher grades over time
These are fast-growing, highly malignant tumors.
Grades: Refers to WHO Grade III and IV
tumors.
Cell Origin: Also arise from astrocytic or
oligodendroalial cells.
Other Names:
Grade II: Anaplastic astrocytoma, Anaplastic oligodendroglioma
Grade IV: Glioblastoma (also called glioblastoma multiforme or GBM)
Characteristics: Rapid growth, highly infiltrative, resistant to treatment, frequent recurrence.
Prognosis: Poorer, especiallv for Grade IV glioblastoma which is one of the most aggressive brain tumors
